KEOKUK — The biggest win of the year for Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball took place on Friday night in Keokuk.

The Panthers came back from a four-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Keokuk 42-36 on the road, and make a statement in the Southeast Conference.

A couple of three-pointers gave the Panthers a 6-3 lead early, but Keokuk closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 12-8 lead into the second quarter. Mt. Pleasant was able to bounce right back in the second quarter, taking it 12-6 to give themselves a 20-18 lead at the break.

Keokuk came out firing again in the third quarter and re-took the lead. Mt. Pleasant found themselves trailing by four points, at 32-28, when the third quarter ended, but the Panthers were still in decent position to pull off the big win.

The Panthers had their best quarter in the fourth period. Mt. Pleasant scored a game-high 14 points in the period and held the Chiefs to four points to stun the Keokuk crowd and grab their first SEC win of the year.

It was Mt. Pleasant’s first win over the Chiefs since the 2014-15 season. The win ended a five-game skid against Keokuk and Fairfield, who have been 1-2 in the SEC in each of the last two years.

Kalynn Batey led the team with 13 points, three assists and three steals., including a 2-4 night from three-point land. Isabel Ashton scored 12 points, going 2-2 from down town and also co-leading the team with eight rebounds.

Maddie Williamson scored nine points in the win, and co-led the squad with three assists. Sadie Carrasco and Elli Liechty scored three points apiece and Emma Huckabone had two points. Taylor Murray didn’t score, but finished the game with two steals and five rebounds.

Mt. Pleasant moved to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. They will look to parlay that momentum into a couple of weekend wins at home. The first of those home games are on Friday, Dec. 15, when they host Ft. Madison at 7:30 p.m.
