Panther girls take Fairfield invite

MP girls start season off with a win, Mertens takes individual crown in boys’ race

FAIRFIELD — It was wet and it was muddy in Fairfield on Thursday afternoon, but that didn’t stop the area’s cross-country runners from showing out at the Trojan Invite. Mt. Pleasant, Winfield-Mt. Union and Danville-New London were all in action, with the Panther girls shining the brightest.

The Mt. Pleasant girls took first place in the big school class, scoring 59 points. All five scorers finished in the top five, led by Abby Ryon, who took second place individually in 19:21. Fairfield’s Ashley Bloomquist edged Ryon by one second.

Cristina Carthey finished 12th overall in 21;53. Maggie Jennings was 13th, in 21:56. Kendall Dascher was 14th, in 22:10, and Claire Holtkamp finished 18th, in 22:27.

Non-scorers for MP were Abby Blint, who crossed the tape in 23:43 for 30th, and Liz Perry, who crossed in 41st, with a time of 24:49.

Danville-New London placed fourth in the big-school class. Lexi Brown placed third, in 19:50, and Addison Parrott was seventh, in 21:02.

Carissa Mackey was 21st overall, in 23:06. Alyssa Pfadenhauer placed 27th, in 23:38. BreAnn Yaley placed 32nd, in 23:49. Lia Reighard was 34th, in 23:55, and Lilly Garnsey placed 39th, in 24:33.

Cody Mertens and Dalton Moyle had a couple of big results for the Panther boys. Mertens won the meet by 22 seconds, crossing the tape in 16:19. Moyle was third place overall, in 17:14.

That led to a sixth-place finish for the Panthers, scoring 135 points. Fairfield won the boys’ meet with 56 points.

Thadd Brooks was the third Panther across the line, running the race in 19:39 seconds for 36th place. Logan White was 46th overall in 20:43. Drake Snavely placed 50th in 20:59 seconds. Heath Brooks was 58th, in 22:06, and Luke Ryron finished 59th in 22:16.

Danville-New London finished fifth on the boys’ side with 125 points. Alexander Julian was ninth place, in 18:09, and Ty Carr was 18th, in 18:52.

Cody Welch crossed the line in 29th, running the race in 19:21. Max Wilcox was 32nd, in 19:28. Gabriel Gourley was 37th, in 19:44. Seth Bailey finished 44th in 20:26, and Oliver Sowell was 45th, in 20:32.

W-MU finished fifth in the small school girls’ class, with 147 points. The W-MU boys took seventh place with 200 points.

Avery Maeder finished the race in 23:55 for 18th place individually. Isabella Mertens was 21st, in 24:19. Farrah Nelson crossed the line in 24:47 for 26th. Whitney Vantiger placed 32nd, in 26:02, and Kaden Fitz was 50th in 30:17.

Brody Barton finished fourth place individually in the boys’ race. He crossed in 18:18. Talon Newton was 40th, in 22:24. Dane Sweezer finished 41st, in 22:28.

Avinn Newton and Jack Moody finished 57th and 58th, in 26:31 and 26:35 respectively. Destiny Calvin was 61st, in 28:11, and Ben Hemsworth finished 63rd, in 28:43.
