Anni Liechty is a junior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther girls’ softball team.

Liechty has been a starter for MPCHS since her eighth-grade year, competing for both the 2015 and 2017 state tournament teams. She also plays golf and volleyball, and has represented Mt. Pleasant at state golf.

Liechty met with The News on Wednesday during practice. The questions are in bold with her answers following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Yes, I did.

How long have you played softball? Since I was probably five.

Did you just follow in (older sister) Cali’s footsteps? Yeah, basically. In t-ball our dad coached us, and we’re here.

Do you know what you’re doing after high school? I think I know what I’m doing. I want to go to Iowa and study Human Resources.

On a scale of 1-10, how nervous were you playing at state as an eighth-grader? I was real nervous, but I was more nervous at the beginning of the season. I was pretty comfortable with the girls and where I was playing, so it wasn’t terribly nerve-racking for me.

Did you know that you and Makayla Cam would be varsity players right off the bat or was that a surprise to you? It was a surprise because there were a lot of good girls older than me. I was really hoping it would happen, but it was a pretty big surprise.

If Coach Mears had a mute button and he could quiet down any of you whenever he wanted, who would he use it on most? I bet Lyndi (Vantiger). She talks a lot, but it’s fun to hear her talk. She’s a funny girl.

When you aren’t at school or practice, what can we find you doing? I’ll normally be around my friends or my family…or my dog. I spend a lot of time with him.

Do you have any nicknames? Not really. (With) Trinity and Makayla, we kind of have an inside joke where we call each other by our last names. It’s not really funny, but when girls do it it is, because it’s like in football, they call each other by their last names all the time. We’ll call Trinity “Krabill” and they’ll call me, “Liechty.” It’s just kind of fun.

You’ve played a bunch of sports in high school, but if you could pick one you haven’t played and go out for it, which would you choose? Soccer, definitely soccer. When I’m doing bad in golf, I’ll be in the middle of the meet, and I’m not supposed to talk to my dad. But every time I have a bad shot, I’ll look at him and say, “I’m quitting golf and I’m playing soccer next year, dad!” It just looks fun to me.

What position would you play? I don’t know! I don’t know soccer well enough to know any positions.

We’re going to play a game. For every question, you answer either yourself or your sister Elli. Which of you is most competitive? Me, definitely.

Which of you is more of a sports fan, in general? I’d say me again. Neither of us are, but if I had to choose, it would be me.

Who’s the better cook? Elli. I suck at cooking. I’m awful.

Does she ever cook for you? Nope! Just for herself!

Which of you can get away with more at home? It depends on the day, but normally Elli. She’s pretty sassy and my parents just put up with it sometimes because she’s the baby.

If you two are running late to practice, who’s fault is it most likely? Mine! I’m late. She’s always trying to get me in the car 30 minutes early.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? J-Lo (Jennifer Lopez). She’s cool. I love her and her music, and she’s just really cool.

She must be timeless because I would think that J-Lo would be before your time. Yeah, definitely not! I love J-Lo.

What would you guys do? I don’t know! She could teach me how to sing, because I have an awful voice and I want to learn how to sing.

If you could have a super power for the rest of your life, what would you choose? I would want to fly. I think that would be cool if no one else could fly, just me.

That would help you in golf too, because you wouldn’t have to walk to the ball. You’re right! Exactly.

Favorite movie or TV show? Right now, I’m stuck on Riverdale. Do you know what that is?

Explain it a little bit. It’s like…there are kids in high school and they kind of solve a bunch of mysteries. The cops won’t solve them so they take it into their own hands and try to solve it. It’s so fake but it’s fun to watch.

Don’t make fun of me for knowing this, but is that the one that’s a “Pretty Little Liars” spin-off? Yes, kind of!

Who is your favorite teacher? Mrs. Klopfenstein, I loved her! She was my fourth grade teacher, and she was just so nice and generous to me.

Last thing. Do you have any shout outs? Ah, shoot. Shout out to the softball team! We’re pretty cool.

Panther Profile is a series of interviews with Mt. Pleasant athletes currently in season. This season will focus on members of the baseball and softball teams.
