Austin Buckert is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther boys’ golf team. Buckert is making his varsity debut this season.

Buckert is a multisport athlete at Mt. Pleasant. He has also played football and ran track for the Panthers.

Buckert met with The News on Monday after practice. The questions are in bold and his answers are following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? I did.

How long have you been golfing? I started my freshman year.

Did anything specific make you go out for it? There were some upper classmen that I enjoyed being around, so I just wanted to golf with them.

Have you made plans for after high school? I’m going to Iowa State.

Do you know what you’re studying? Business and Financing right now.

What is your favorite course to play golf at? I like the Burlington course. It’s very nice.

Do you prefer the harder courses or do you prefer the ones like here where it’s just straight? I like straight holes, that’s the main thing.

What is it about a hole that intimidates you most? I don’t like narrow fairways at all. Water doesn’t really get me much, but I like open fairways because I don’t really hit the ball straight.

Do you golf better in groups, a pair or by yourself? I like to golf in a pair. If it’s someone I enjoy golfing with, I usually hit pretty well.

Who’s your favorite playing partner? Probably Grant Goody. He’s a good guy.

Is there something that annoys you most that other players do, like take too long or talk too much? If they talk in your backswing, that kind of sucks. Or if they step in your line when you put. I don’t really like when they do that.

When you aren’t at school or practice, what can we find you doing? Just at home sleeping.

Are your friends jealous of how much time you get off of school for tournaments? Yeah. I get out of school a lot lately. I’ve missed like five days of school in the last three weeks.

Do you like it like that or do you wish it was after school so you didn’t have extra work? I mean, I don’t really have much to get caught up on because it’s my senior year. So I don’t mind it.

Do you have any pets? I do not.

Have you ever had one? I had a goldfish named Jose, but he passed away.

You’re running for president and have to pick one teammate to be your running-mate, who do you choose? Probably Brett Baccam.

How come? I don’t know…his political status is about the same as mine.

Favorite cell phone app? Snapchat.

Are you an iPhone or an Android guy? I have an iPhone.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? Probably Michael Jordan.

What would you guys do? I’d probably beat him one-on-one.

Would you post him up, or just take him from the outside? I’d probably just shoot threes in his eyes all day, but that’s just me.

What if you could pick a superpower to have for the rest of your life? Super speed.

If you had super speed would you ever use a golf cart? I would probably still use a golf cart because I’d get tired.

Who is your favorite teacher? Mrs. Scherer. She’s a helper in chemistry. She helped me a lot in chemistry. I took it in two years because I couldn’t get it done in one.

So it’s good to have someone like that. Yep!

Do you have any shout outs? Colin Mulford and Dalton Bass.

Panther Profile is a series of interviews with Mt. Pleasant athletes currently in season. This season will focus on members of the golf, track and field, tennis and soccer teams.
