Mt. Pleasant News

Brianna Shelman is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther girls’ basketball team.

Shelman is the starting point guard for the Panthers. She is also a member of the MPCHS track and field team.

Shelman met with The News on Tuesday morning before practice. The questions appear in bold.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? No. I actually grew up in the small town of Olds. It’s about 20 miles north of here.

They have a gas station there. They have a gas station there! But only about 220 people in the whole town, so it’s pretty small.

How long have you been playing basketball? I’ve been playing basketball since…well, technically since the third grade, but I’ve grown up with it because I have two older brothers that were very involved in basketball.

Do you know what you’re doing after high school? I am going to Iowa State to major in psychology and then continuing my education at Iowa Law school.

Do you have a favorite basketball memory? Oh my. Ok, it was my sophomore year at Fairfield. We went into overtime and then scored six points back-to-back-to-back and came back and won. Mounts, our coach at that time, just jumped off the bench and screamed, “I love this sport!” That’s a memory I will always remember.

Who is your favorite team to play against? Probably Fairfield just because we know a lot of the girls and they’re a great team. They’re fun to play.

Besides Mt. Pleasant, which school in the conference has the rowdiest fans or best student section? Probably Fairfield again. Usually they are bashing us so it’s kind of funny in the long run.

Which of your teammates is it hardest to guard in practice? Oh, Kalynn (Batey), because we have very similar mindsets on things, but she’s bigger than me and she was a post in eighth-grade so she has the post moves. Whenever we have to play one on one, I give up. She beats me every time.

What type of music gets you most pumped up for a game? Oh gosh, I like throw-back. Throw-back music.

Throwback to like when? Until like 2005-2006. It’s weird to think that’s a throw-back now.

If Coach Maynard had a mute button and could silence anyone during practice, who would he use it on the most? Sarah Moffett.

Sarah Moffet, is she a talker? Yeah!

Are you a morning person or a night person? No, I prefer to sleep until noon. Last Sunday I slept till 4 p.m., so definitely a night person. So

So these morning practices really don’t do it for you? No, I’m pretty worthless in the morning to be honest.

Would you rather go without TV or internet? TV. I actually don’t watch much TV as it is just because of how often I’m at a sport practice, so definitely without TV.

Alright so now if you’re not at practice or a game, what can we find you doing? Hanging out with my teammates outside of practice.

Oh so just chilling with them anyway? Exactly!

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? Lebron James.

Would you guys play against each other? I mean, he’d make me look silly but I’d try.

All the kids love Lebron. Oh yeah, he’s awesome.

I’m still a Michael Jordan guy. Are you? I’ve seen Lebron play twice now so it was an awesome experience.

What if you could pick a superpower to have for the rest of your life? Teleport, so I could just go wherever in the world.

Would you use that in your basketball game? Nah, that’d be cheating! Gotta play fair.

I like that. Where would be the first place you teleported to? Probably Alaska. Just because I’d like to see the Northern Lights. That would be cool.

You might want to put on a couple of coats before you go though. Exactly, it’d be a little cold.

Here is a new one we have never asked. If you had to give up one food group for the rest of your life, what would you give up? Oh, meat. I’m not a big meat eater. Anything with bones or anything, I won’t eat it, so I’d give up meat.

So are you like full on vegetarian? No, I eat McDonalds every day, so there is meat there, but other than that I’m not a huge meat eater.

That’s kind of fake meat anyway. Yeah, exactly. So basically vegetarian.

Do you have any nicknames? No, I usually just go by my last name. Like during basketball, everyone just calls me Shelman. That’s typically what it is. Never “Bri.” Noone ever calls me “Bri.”

Are you a dog person or a cat person? Cat, for sure. Even though they seem to be butt heads and not really loveable, I love cats!

Do you have any? I have two. One of them is 11-years old, so he’s getting up there.

Who’s your favorite teammate to ride on the bus with to away games? Oh, Kalynn Batey. We are together with everything. Always her.

Alright, last question. What is your favorite class in school? World History 1, because I have that with Maynard, so I just have my coach in there. So that’s definitely my favorite class.
