Mt. Pleasant News

Emma Overton is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther girls’ bowling team.

Overton is one of the few returners for the Panther girls and the defending individual champion in the Southeast Conference.

She met with The News on Tuesday before practice. The questions appear in bold with her answers following.

We go easy questions first, did you grow up in Mt. Pleasant? Yes, I did.

Do you remember the first time you went bowling? It was probably when I was in fifth-grade. We went with like, a big party with a bunch of my friends. We went bowling and it was so much fun.

Did you have a time that you figured out you were particularly good at it? Probably when I was in seventh or eighth-grade. It was right before high school was starting and I was practicing a lot and starting to get a lot better. I kind of knew that I wanted to be on the bowling team.

Do you have plans for after high school? I would like to attend the University of Iowa and get my degree in education.

Do you have a grade in mind that you’d like to teach? Probably between third and fifth-grade.

You’re a veteran on a pretty young team. There are a lot of newbies on varsity. Did you have any advice for any of the girls who are stepping up this year? I would tell them to not let anything get you down. If you throw a bad ball, just let it go. It’s in the past. You can’t change it, so start fresh and do what you gotta do.

Do you play better in a quiet environment or when the alley is packed with fans? It kind of depends. Sometimes I do really good in practice and sometimes I do better when we have a meet. I guess it just depends on the day.

Do you interact with the fans much during the meet? Not really. I just kind of try to focus on what I’m doing to make sure I’m doing my best.

Do you remember your highest score ever? Yeah, it was about two weeks ago and it was a 253.

Do you have any superstitions? I have to wear ankle socks every time I bowl. If I wear long socks, it throws me off and I can’t do it.

Messes up the groove, huh? Yeah, it does mess up my groove.

Would you rather be rich or famous? Oooh…Probably rich because I tend to have a very expensive taste. It would be better with my lifestyle if I was rich.

Would you rather have tickets to the Superbowl, the Golden Globes or a Broadway play? I would probably want to have tickets to Broadway because we went to New York for our band trip. We went to go see Wicked and I loved it. I would love to go see another one.

Alright, this one we ask everyone. You can hang out with one celebrity for a whole day. Who do you choose? Maybe Chris Evans because I find him so funny. When I see all the outtakes and stuff from all his movies, he is hilarious. I just feel like sometimes I can be really funny and we can just bounce off each other and have fun all day.

What would you do, would you pepper him with questions all day? Probably like go bowling or hang out or something.

What if you could have one super power? Be able to fly because then I can get to wherever I’ve got to go just like that. I wouldn’t have to worry about traffic or anything!

Where is the first place you’d fly to? I’d fly to Chicago. See my sister and then, if I’m rich, I can go and buy stuff while I’m there too!

If you could go back in time to any point in history, where would you go? Oh, that’s kind of hard. I don’t know, I guess I might go to maybe like the 1920s. It was kind of like a good time in the United States. Nothing real bad was happening back then.

The “roaring twenties,” right? Yeah, it was a pretty good time!

What is one thing about Coach Mears that you guys would know and maybe other people don’t? He likes cracking jokes and I don’t know if a lot of people do because I know some people think he is kind of serious but a lot of the time he is really not. He loves to crack jokes and have fun.

You vs. Coach Mears 10 frames one-on-one. Who wins? Coach Mears all the way. Last week he got a 300 and I haven’t yet, so he’d probably do better than me.

If you had to give up one food group for the rest of your life, what do you choose? I should probably give up sweets. All the sugars and stuff.

Are you a morning person or a night person? Night person.

Hot weather or cold weather? Cold. A lot of my outfits are more cold weather suited. You can always bundle up but you can’t always dress down.

That’s true. Favorite singer or band? I don’t really have a favorite. I kind of like the Imagine Dragons. They have really good albums.

Last question. Who is your favorite teacher? Ooh, favorite teacher? I’d probably say my advisor, Mrs. Slagel. We have come become really close in our advisory every week. I feel like I can talk to her about a lot of stuff because she is pretty young and so she kind of understands what we’re going through a little more. I just feel like I can talk to her.
