Jake Lowe is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther boys’ track and field team.

Lowe has been a sprinter and hurdler for Mt. Pleasant all four years and is a member of the 2015 state champion shuttle hurdle relay team. He made the 110-meter high hurdle finals last year after returning from injury just in time for the state qualifiers.

Lowe met with The News on Wednesday before practice. The questions are in bold with his answers following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Yeah. I grew up here until about kindergarten and then I moved out to California. Then in second grade I moved back and just kind of reunited with my hometown.

How long have you been running track? Since seventh grade.

Did you pretty much know you were going to be fast right away? No, I actually started out as a distance guy. I didn’t pick up any speed until about my freshman year.

Do you know what you’re doing after high school? Yeah, I plan on attending the University of Iowa and going pre-dental.

What is your favorite event? Probably the shuttle hurdle relay.

A few years ago you were a freshman on that great shuttle team that had really high expectations. What were your nerves like when you ran with them? The first year was just kind of a learning year for me. From that point on, I knew I had to take what I had learned from the guys before me and implement it on the new team.

What’s the worst you’ve ever fell on a hurdle? Probably my freshman year during practice. I totally face-planted over the first high-hurdle that I ever tried to go over.

Were a lot of people watching? All of my teammates were. They got a kick out of it.

When the big meets come up, what is your preparation like? Do you listen to music, chat with teammates or stay quiet? I like to talk. Talking gets my mind off of it, and then I just kind of do it. I’m not much of a music listener when it comes to sports.

If you could go out for a new sport today that you haven’t already played in high school, what would it be? Probably soccer. I played it a lot as a kid, and I like the sport a lot, but it conflicts with track too much.

When you aren’t at school or practice, what can we find you doing? Hanging out at home, hanging out with family. In the summer, you’ll see me at the pool. I’m a lifeguard there. Or I’ll be working at the movie theatre.

Do you have any irrational fears? Yeah. I like to fish, but if I’m in the water with something that’s faster than me, and I can’t control what they’re going to do with me, I get freaked out.

Just fish, or are you afraid there is going to be bigger stuff? Like, if we’re in a pond or a lake or something it kind of freaks me out that there is something below me that I can’t see.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only choose one teammate to be stranded with, who do you choose? I’d probably take Cole Burns because he’s a pretty funny guy. He likes to talk a lot, so he’ll keep me entertained for a while.

This might be the same answer then, but which of your teammates would make the best stand up comedian? Cole definitely would. He’s full of jokes.

Which would make the best president? I’d have to go with Keegan Rich. He’s a pretty logical guy.

Do you think he could win an election? Probably. He’s a homeschool kid so he’d have to get more social experience but other than that he’s a pretty good guy.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? Either Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford. I’m a big star wars guy.

Spoiler alert here but were you upset that (Luke Skywalker) died? I mean, it had to happen at some point, so I’m glad he went out the way he did.

What would you guys do? Shoot, I don’t know. Go watch a couple Star Wars movies, talk about it. Do some cool stuff with them for a day.

What if you could have a super power for the rest of your life? Super speed for sure. That would be cool.

Would you hone it in until state or would you just go all out? I’d go all out all the time if I had it.

Who is your favorite teacher? Probably Mrs. Anderson. She’s just really laid back. She understands everything, and she just gets kids, so that’s nice.

Do you have any shout outs? My parents, Scott and Amy Lowe, because they’re just awesome parents and they look out for me and always do everything they can for me.

Panther Profile is a series of interviews with Mt. Pleasant athletes currently in season. This season will focus on members of the golf, track and field, tennis and soccer teams.
