Kalynn Batey is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther girls’ basketball team.

Batey has started all four years for the Panthers. She is also a member of the Panther volleyball and track and field teams. She met with The News on Wednesday morning after practice.

The questions will appear in bold type with Batey’s answers following.

Did you grow up in Mt. Pleasant? Yes, I did.

How long have you been playing basketball? Probably since about second or third grade.

Do you have plans for after high school? If I play basketball, I’ll either go to Coe or Simpson. If not, Iowa is an option because I want to go in to pre-med.

You’ve been a starter on this team for a long time. How does this team differ from the last few years? We’re a lot younger this year than (any) team I’ve ever been on. In my freshman year, we had six seniors. My sophomore year, we only had two seniors but we had six or seven juniors, and then my junior year we had six or seven seniors. So now we’re really young. We have two seniors and like, three or four juniors. Mostly underclassmen getting a lot of playing time, so that’s a lot different.

Was it more nerve-racking your freshman year, right before a game, than it is now? Yeah. Both are different, because my freshman year I felt less pressure in a way because I wasn’t supposed to be in charge of leading everyone. I was just kind of there. I was kind of just scared to mess up. Now, I have to be the leader, so that is nerve-racking in different ways.

What word or phrase does Coach Watson say to you the most in practice? Probably “don’t walk!”

Which of your teammates would make the best coach? Probably Maddie (Williamson).

How come? Just because of her dad. She’s been around it, and she’s learned a lot from him.

Which one would make the best stand up comedian? Definitely Grace (Bittle) or Sadie (Carrasco). They’re funny.

If you could play one new sport that you haven’t played in high school, what would you choose? If they had table tennis here, I would definitely play.

Really, are you a pretty good table tennis player? Yeah! My brothers and I play a lot.

Are you a morning person or a night person? I’m definitely a night person. I hate mornings.

Really? So you don’t like morning practices? No!

Is conditioning worse in the morning or in the afternoon? Definitely in the morning, because you’re just tired and don’t want to move.

If you had to move to a different state, where would you go? Probably like, Alabama maybe. Just because I like the beaches.

Would you rather win tickets to a Broadway play, the Superbowl or the Oscars? Probably a play, that’d be cool. On the New York/DC trip for band, we got to go to a play, and it was really cool.

Which play did you go to? I went to Wicked.

What is your favorite cell phone app? Definitely Snapchat.

Who is the best Twitter follow? I guess Ellen Degeneres.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would it be? Probably Jennifer Anniston.

Why is that? I like “Friends” a lot.

What would you guys do? Probably just watch “Friends” together, I guess!

Do you think Jennifer Anniston is any good at basketball? Probably not.

What if you could have a super power? Probably to fly, just because that would be cool.

Who is your favorite teacher? Mrs. Anderson. I had her last year and this year, and she’s just really fun to be around. She makes class cool.

Do you have any shout outs? To my team for always being there for each other, and my parents for always supporting me.
