Kyle Vanderham is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther cross-country team.

Vanderham has been a part of back-to-back state team berths for the MPCHS boys. He is also a distance runner for the track and field team.

Vanderham met with The News on Wednesday after practice. The questions are in bold with his answers following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? No. I was actually born in California. I moved here in about fifth-grade.

Was it a little different moving out here to the Midwest? Yeah, from the big city to small town, it was a big difference.

What city did you live by? Kind of by Los Angeles.

How long have you been running cross-country? I’ve been running since seventh-grade when Mr. Anderson asked me to go out.

Oh yeah? Did he do a little recruiting? Yeah, he did.

Do you know what you’re doing after high school? I’m definitely going to go to college, looking into engineering of some sort.

Do you have any favorite (school) or are you just playing the field? Just playing the field. Nothing specific yet.

You and Cody (Mertens) are the only varsity returners. How has it been this year with the new squad? It’s been fun. They are all still pretty experienced. They were running on JV last year. We have a couple of new guys, but they’re really starting the season out well.

What is your favorite course to run at? Ft. Dodge, state. It’s a lot of fun just to be up there.

Do you have an offseason running buddy? Well, this whole past summer it was Cody. We kind of live near each other so we get together in the afternoons and go on our run.

Do you listen to any music when you run or are you a silent runner? I’m a silent runner. We just like to talk to each other.

Is it a no-music thing with the team? Yeah, it’s kind of our tradition. We don’t listen to music while we’re running as a team together.

What season do you like better, track or cross-country? Cross-country. It’s a little bit of a different experience, but it’s a lot of fun.

On the away meets, who is your seat buddy, is it Cody? Yeah, last meet it was Cody. We usually just sit by each other and talk about the race, and how we think we want to do and everything. He’s my guy.

Are you big into the XC diets, the pasta and all that stuff? A little bit, just before the meet. Other than that I don’t get too much into it.

Do you do fast food during the season? Not fast food, but like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, stuff like that. Just before the meets is when I eat the pasta.

Android or iPhone? Android.

What is your favorite Android app? I use Snapchat a lot.

I like that you said Android, all these kids have the iPhone now. Yeah, I’ve had Android since I got my first phone, so I’m sticking with it.

We’re kind of a dying breed, but I’m sticking with it too. Alright, favorite movie or TV show? Favorite movie (is) probably Batman. The Dark Knight (trilogy).

What movie was the best of the three? The Dark Knight.

If you could pick one teammate to be a coach, who’d make the best one? I’d say Dalton Moyle. He’d tell it to you straight. He’d be a good coach. He’d let you know what you’re doing wrong and make you better.

What about best stand-up comedian? Alec Gardner.

Pretty funny dude? Yeah, he’s a funny guy.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? Rob Gronkowski.

What would you guys do? I don’t know. He likes to have a lot of fun. Play football of course.

Do you guys still have the fantasy league? Last year when I talked to you guys, you had a secret cross-country fantasy league. Yeah, we’ve got a league this year too. All the guys on the team are in it.

Who won it last year? Adam Bodenham.

What if you could pick a super power? Probably go invisible.

That would be a good one. You’d never cheat with it though, right? No, of course not.

Who is your favorite teacher? I’ll go with Mr. Anderson, just because he’ll probably hear this. Let him know he’s my favorite.

Panther Profile is a series of interviews with Mt. Pleasant athletes currently in season. This season will focus on athletes in cross-country, football and volleyball.
