OSCEOLA — The Mt. Pleasant volleyball team built a little momentum this weekend as the team prepares for the conference opener tonight (Tuesday). The Panthers traveled to Clarke High School in Osceola and went 3-1 in the tournament.

The Panthers picked up wins over Lamoni, Chariton and Martensdale-St. Mary’s before falling just short of a perfect day with a loss to the hosting Indians.

Mt. Pleasant had to come back to win in their game against Lamoni. The Panthers dropped a tough first set 22-20, but battled back to win 21-12 in the second set and take the deciding third set 15-12.

The Panthers went to three sets with Chariton as well. Mt. Pleasant took set one, 21-15, but the Chargers flipped the score in the second set taking it 21-15 themselves. Mt. Pleasant ran away with the deciding third set, 15-7.

Mt. Pleasant cruised against Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The Panthers swept the Blue Devils 21-14 and 21-12 for their third win of the day.

The Panthers looked strong early against Clarke, taking the first set 25-16. The Indians forced a game three, though, with a 25-19 win in the second set. In the decider, the Panthers were outlasted 15-12 and MPCHS had to settle for a 3-1 day.

Mt. Pleasant has a big one tonight at home. The Panthers will face defending Southeast Conference champion Ft. Madison in the season opener. That game is set to start at 7:30 p.m., with freshman and JV games preceding at 5:45 p.m.
