CEDAR RAPIDS — The No. 23 Mt. Pleasant wrestling team is getting set to take on No. 9 Johnston tonight (Wednesday) in their first ever regional dual.

The Panthers will start off the night’s action at 6 p.m. They’ll hope to pull the upset, and if they do, they’ll have a chance to take on Cedar Rapids Prairie for a spot at the state duals tournament.

Coach Anthony Blint has said the Panthers will use the duals as a way to earn experience points towards the future and get ready for the all-important district meet in Mt. Pleasant this Saturday.

The Panthers will have their hands more than full in their first round matchup. Johnston sports four wrestlers currently ranked in the top 10 in’s 3A rankings.

Mt. Pleasant earned their spot in the regional tournament with a 15-win season, the first in school history.

If the Panthers do win tonight, they’ll immediately face Prairie, so Mt. Pleasant needs two big upsets in two nights to punch their tickets to Des Moines.

The Class 3A district tournament will begin at 12 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 11, in Mt. Pleasant. There, the Panthers will fight for spots in the state tournament against Prairie, Ft. Madison, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa and Pella.
