FT. MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant cross-country teams made quite the statement in Ft. Madison on Thursday night, sweeping a meet which included all other SEC teams, plus Burlington.

Cody Mertens and Kyle Vanderham went one-two to lead the boys’ team to a dominant win and the girls placed three in the top eight to take the top spot despite competing without lead runner Abby Ryon.

The boys’ team scored 40 points which was a full 27 ahead of Ft. Madison in second place. Mertens cruised again with a top time of 16:39.4, and Vanderham crossed in second with a time of 17:24.4.

Dalton Moyle and Alec Gardner placed 10th and 11th respectively. Moyle finished in 18:20.4 and Gardner was right behind him in 18:21. Dakota Trsika placed 16th in 18:51.9, and Drake Snavely was 27th in 19:56.1.

The girls’ team scored 44 points to top the hosting Bloodhounds by eight points. It was senior Taylor Murray who led the way, cracking the top five with a fourth-place 21:00.2.

Kendall Dascher and Cristina Carthey crossed the line in seventh and eighth. Dascher ran a 22:31.1 and Carthey finished in 22:32.6.

Claire Holtkamp placed 12th in 23:12.9. Kelsey Notestein was 13th in 23:15.3. Delaney McDowell finished 16th in 23:32.8, and Liz Perry rounded out the Panther runners with a 20th-place 24:10.3.

The girls took home their first team trophy of the season. The boys made it two in a row at SEC courses, taking the Fairfield meet last week.

The Panthers will carry this momentum into their home meet, which will be next Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m.
