Mt. Pleasant didn’t pick up a win in Tuesday night’s doubleheader, but they put up quite the fight against the No. 1 team in Class 3A. The Panthers lost 8-6 in game one and dropped game two 8-7 against No. 1 Davenport Assumption.

The Panthers had the Knights worried midway through game one. After trailing 1-0 after the first three innings, the Panthers scored three runs off of two wild pitches in the fourth.

Assumption capitalized on a flurry of Mt. Pleasant walks to score seven runs in the top of the fifth. The Panthers cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the fifth, however. Cooper Huckabone had an RBI double, Caleb Potts knocked in one with a single and Huckabone scored on another wild pitch.

The Panther pitching staff was able to keep it close in the final two innings, and Mt. Pleasant threatened in both. Trace White was on second with a one-out double in the sixth and Noah Walls had a leaoff single in the seventh, but neither ended up scoring.

“We walked too many guys,” head coach Brent Broeker said about game one. “We gave up seven walks, and if we didn’t do that I think we would have been right in that game.”

Assumption scored eight runs in the first four innings of game two and the Panthers had their backs against the wall. Mt. Pleasant battled back by scoring the next seven runs, however, to give the Knights a scare.

Caleb started the rally in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun, the first of the year for Mt. Pleasant. In the sixth, Colby Potts and Grant Goody scored on errors and Huckabone brought home three with a three-run double.

Assumption was fortunate to get out of the inning with a two-run lead. White hit a liner to third base, but the Assumption third baseman caught it and doubled off the runner at third.

Goody made a nice sliding catch in the top of the seventh inning to hold off any more Assumption runs. Chase Lamm got on in the bottom of the seventh and scored on an error, but the Panthers came up one-run short.

“I thought we swung the bats much better than we did last night,” said Broeker after the night was over. “We went up there and we actually battled...It was fun to play tonight because our guys competed.”

Bryce Anderson started the first game for Mt. Pleasant and picked up the loss, allowing just three runs. Jordan Magnani took the loss in game two, pitching four innings and giving up eight runs.

The Panthers will be at North Scott for their next contest on Thursday, May 24, beginning at 7 p.m.
