GRINNELL — The Mt. Pleasant volleyball team won just one match in the Grinnell tournament on Saturday, but that win did come against one of the Panthers’ chief rivals.

Mt. Pleasant defeated Washington 2-1 for their first win of the year. The Panthers fell 2-0 to Grinnell and Iowa Valley and 2-1 to Lynville-Sully and Carlisle.

The win over Washington wasn’t easy. The Demons took game one 21-17 and Mt. Pleasant had to take the next two to pull it off. The Panthers flipped the script in the second set, taking it 21-17, and then closed out the game 15-10 to get in the winner’s column in 2018.

The Panthers dropped a tough first set to hosting Grinnell, falling 21-19. The Tigers were able to put Mt. Pleasant away in the second game, taking it 21-10.

The Iowa Valley game mirrored the Grinnell game. Mt. Pleasant dropped a close first set, 21-18, and dropped off a bit in the second set, losing it 21-14.

After dropping the first set 21-15 to Lynnville-Sully, the Panthers battled back to take the second set 21-17. Mt. Pleasant was unable to pull out a win in game three, falling 15-11.

The Carlisle match was the closest of the day for Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers grinded out a win in extras in the first set, 23-21, but couldn’t pull off the sweep as Carlisle squeaked out a 21-19 win in set two. The Panthers dropped another third set as Carlisle was able to take it 15-11 to steal the win.

The Panthers fell to 1-5 overall with the loss, and the road doesn’t get any easier this week. Mt. Pleasant will face the two teams who have run the conference for the last few years, traveling to Ft. Madison on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and hosting Fairfield on Thursday, Aug. 30.
