Panthers move on to substate

MP boys’ tennis team edges Bloodhounds, moves one win away from state

FT. MADISON — It was about as tight as you could ask for on Friday evening in Ft. Madison, but the Panther boys’ tennis team is on their way to substate. Mt. Pleasant took out the Bloodhounds 5-4 in their preliminary substate matchup on Saturday, moving the Panthers one win away from state.

The Panthers and Bloodhounds split the singles matches three games apiece. Corbin Broeker, Elijah Plooster and Donny Arledge eached picked up wins for Mt. Pleasant.

Broeker won the No. 2 singles match, topping Austin Krueger 7-6(3) and 7-6(0). Plooster topped Blake Feuerhammer 7-5 and 6-1 in the No. 4 match and Arledge took down Gage Hind 6-2 and 6-2 in the No. 6 match.

Ethan Weber dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-2 and 6-4 to Sam Avery. Jaxon Hoyle lost the No. 3 singles match 6-0 and 6-1 to Jason Thurman. Jack Schimmelpfennig dropped the No. 5 singles match 6-4 and 6-0.

It all came down to the doubles matches, which Mt. Pleasant pulled out 2-1. All three doubles matches went to a deciding third set.

Broeker and Hoyle hung on to win the No. 1 doubles match, toppling Avery and Krueger 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Plooster and Arledge grinded out the closest match of the day, beating Feuerhammer and Hind in the No. 3 match.

Weber and Schimmelpfennig lost the No. 2 match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, but the Bloodhounds still came up one-match short.

The Panthers will have their hands full in their substate game on Saturday, May 19. They will head to Pella to take on an 8-1 Little Dutch team. Mt. Pleasant will come into the match 7-5. The winner of Saturday’s substate will earn their spot in the team state tournament later this month.
