FT. MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team put the Southeast Conference on notice Thursday night in Ft. Madison.

The Panthers grinded out a 39-33 win on the road, pinning five Bloodhounds during the night and grinding out a 39-33 win on a Jaden Davis pin in the final match.

The Panthers started things out right, getting back-to-back quick pins. James DeMeyer picked up a pin in 1:03, and Brennen Bender followed with a first-period pin of his own in the 182 lbs. match, topping his man in 1:38.

Ft. Madison’s Sam Hayes kept the Bloodhounds in it early with a 6-4 decision over Zach Beason at 195 lbs., but Mt. Pleasant responded with four more wins in a row.

Dalton Bass picked up the third Mt. Pleasant pin in 1:04. Henry Lutovsky pulled out a 3-2 win at heavyweight. Corbin Broeker won his 106 lbs. match 9-2, and Brayden Ackles pinned his man in 1:42 to take the 113 lbs. match. After Ackles’ pin, the Panthers held a 30-3 lead, but many Ft. Madison’s big names were still yet to come.

The Bloodhounds picked up three wins in a row at 120 lbs., 126 lbs., and 132 lbs. Each pin lasted 32 seconds or less, and just like that, the Mt. Pleasant lead was down to 30-21.

Avante Henley scored a big win at 138 lbs., winning his match 5-2 to soften the Ft. Madison momentum and inch the Panthers closer to winning the match. The Bloodhounds won the next two matches by fall, and that left it up to Davis at 160 lbs. He faced Ft. Madison’s Austin Haas in a match that went into the second period. Eventually, Davis was able to get the fall, in 3:07, to give Mt. Pleasant the win.

Mt. Pleasant moved to 9-1 with the win. The Panthers currently sit at 2-0 in the Southeast Conference. The Panthers will be at the Iowa City Regina Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 9 a.m.
