Panthers sweep Burlington to reach the .500 plateau

Jun 30, 2014

Taking a break from Southeast Conference battles, the Mt. Pleasant softball team found the non-conference schedule to its liking, trimming Burlington Friday night, 5-2 and 5-3.

The victories even the Panther slate at 14-14, heading into the stretch run of the season.

Jena Sutkerjurgen hurdled the 5-3 win, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked the same number.

Leslie Taylor, Julie Lasswell and Hattie Liechty backed Stukerjurgen with doubles at the plate. Taylor’s double knocked a pair of runs home, ande Lasswell ripped a single to go with her double.

Other hitters were Shelby Allender and Jackie Fraise, each stroking a single.

Mt. Pleasant’s four spot in the fifth wiped out a 3-1 Burlington lead and proved to be the difference in the victory.

Winning-pitcher Shelby Allender took care of business on the mound and at the plate in the second game. At bat, she clubbed a two-run homer and on the hill, the junior gave up seven hits, did not walk a hitter and struck out three.

Lasswell and Stukerjurken had run-producing singles. Freshman Bailey Johnson, however, was the top hitter with a double and two singles in as many plate appearances.

Liechty poled a double and Stukerjurgen had a single.

Mt. Pleasant, with two in the first, one in the fourth and another pair of runs in the fifth had a 5-0 lead before Burlington tallied twice in the sixth.
