Panthers take silver in SEC tourney

Mt. Pleasant boys finish second behind Washington; White, Shelledy and Moffett all tie at 78

KEOKUK — The Mt. Pleasant boys’ golf team topped all but one foe at the Southeast Conference tournament in Keokuk on Tuesday morning. Mt. Pleasant finished second overall in the conference, shooting a 317.

Washington won the meet, out-dueling the Panthers by 11 strokes with a final tally of 317. Ft. Madison scored a 354 to pull out third place by one stroke. Fairfield shot a 355 for fourth and Keokuk placed fifth with 380.

The Panthers were led by a trio of players who finished at 78. Trace White, Jake Moffett and Rhett Zeglen each ended the day at 78 to tie for sixth-place overall.

Shelledy had the best front nine on the team, leading the way with a 39 after nine holes. He shot a 39 on his back nine as well. White shot a 40 on the front nine and dropped two strokes off of his back nine, finishing at 38. White had a birdie on hole nine. Moffett was the big mover in between rounds, shooting a 42 on his front nine and a 36 on his back nine, including a birdie on the 12th hole.

Rhett Zeglen finished the day at 83 to become the fourth Panther scorer. He shot a 44 on his front nine and a 39 on his back nine, including a birdie on the ninth hole.

Brevin Wilson shot a 45 on both the front and back nine to end the day at 90. Austin Buckert rounded out the Panthers with a 96, shooting a 50 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine.

Washington’s Brady Knutson won the meet, shooting a 76 and defeating teammate Jacob Van Osdol on the first playoff hole. There was also a three-way tie at 77. Washington’s Dalton Myers won that playoff for third. Keokuk’s Jake Cook took fourth and Washington’s Brock Sobaski finished fifth.
