The softball postseason heats up this weekend as the two remaining Henry County teams play in regional semifinals. New London will play at Sigourney tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m., and Mt. Pleasant will host Maquoketa on Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m.

The Tigers enter tonight’s game after an 8-7 win at Moravia on Wednesday. Sigourney defeated Winfield-Mt. Union, 7-1. The Tigers enter tonight 15-13 overall, while the Savages sit at 20-11.

Sigourney will likely have revenge on their mind. The Tigers have knocked out the Savages in the last two regional finals. In 2015, New London took down the Savages with a walk-off home run by Jorgi Krieger. New London advanced past Sigourney last season, 13-3 in New London.

Mt. Pleasant (29-10) will take on Maquoketa, a team that blasted Marion, 10-0 on their home field Thursday night. The Cardinals are 12-23 this season but have played ranked 4A teams tight. They fell by just four total runs at No. 1 Benton in a doubleheader earlier this season.

A win from New London tonight would give them a ticket to play top-seeded Martensdale St. Mary’s or Wayne on Monday, July 10, at 7 p.m. Both of those squads have cruised through the early portions of the regional tournament.

Mt. Pleasant would host either ADM or Cedar Rapids Xavier on Tuesday, July 11, at 7 p.m., if they can take down Maquoketa on Saturday. Two more wins from either the Panthers or Tigers would mean a trip to Ft. Dodge and the state softball tournament.
