Panthers, Wolves play in Wilton

Both teams knocked out in pool play, W-MU takes match against MP

WILTON — Both the Mt. Pleasant and Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball teams were in Wilton on Saturday for a tournament. Both the Panthers and the Wolves were knocked out in round robin play.

W-MU was third in the pool, finishing 2-2 including a win over Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers finished fourth in the pool at 1-3.

The Wolves beat the Panthers in straight sets, defeating MP 21-14 and 21-15 when the two Henry County schools met up.

Jenna Buffington led the way for W-MU with five kills in the win. Liana Sweezer had four kills and Madie Anderson had three.

Kayla Edwards had 15 assists and two aces, both of which led the team. Kyndal Townsley had 12 digs.

Hannah Hess led Mt. Pleasant in kills, with three. Lydia Stewart had two kills.

Ralyn Seberg had a team-leading three assists in the loss. Reece Barton had seven digs.

The Wolves’ only other win came against Wyoming Midland. W-MU won that game in straight sets as well, taking game one 21-11 and game two 21-19.

Buffington had five kills in that win. Edwards had nine assists and three aces. Townsley finished with eight digs and three aces.

The Wolves were swept by Wilton and Iowa Mennonite. W-MU fell 21-11 and 21-16 to Wilton, despite six kills from Buffington. They lost 21-17 and 21-16 against IMS. Buffington was the leading killer again, with six.

Mt. Pleasant’s win came over Wyoming Midland. The Panthers won 21-16 and 21-19. Stewart and Avery Sutter each had two kills in the win.

Mt. Pleasant nearly picked up a win over IMS, falling in three sets. The Panthers took the first game 21-14, but fell 21-12 in the second set and 15-12 in the deciding third.

Maggie Cristoforo and Elli Liechty each had four kills in the loss. Lyndi Vantiger had 10 digs, and both Vantiger and Seberg finished the game with two assists.

The Panthers fell 21-7 in both games against Wilton. Sutter led the way with two kills.
