Plans set for Women of Wesleyan Week

Mar 24, 2014

To kick off the Women of Wesleyan Week (WOW) at Iowa Wesleyan College, students, faculty, staff, and the community are invited to participate in a Take-Back-the-Night march on Monday, March 31, beginning at 7:20 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight and will walk from the Scheaffer-Trieschmann Residence Hall on North Broadway Street to Mt. Pleasant’s Central Park in a demonstration of strength and resilience.

The march is a visual as well as an emotional way for men and women to walk the streets with light to symbolize the strength and resilience of women. Most attacks on women occur at night, causing women to fear the night. This event allows women to reclaim the night. At Central Park, students will share poems from “Witness: Speak Out!,” a student-created compilation of creative works inspired by student-led interviews with victims of domestic violence.

“Witness: Speak Out!” will be available for purchase for $2.00 per booklet. Proceeds from the sale of this booklet will be donated to the Domestic Violence Shelter & Sexual Assault Center facilitated by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP). This organization provides shelter, free counseling, and hope to those in Henry, Des Moines, and Johnson counties who seek safety and peace of mind.

It is sincerely hoped that any person experiencing domestic violence or assault can feel empowered to seek help. Domestic Violence Intervention Program Crisis Line: (800) 373-1043.

The Take-Back-the-Night march is sponsored by Dr. Veronica Lestina’s Introduction to Counseling class at IWC.
