Program allows Super Bowl party hosts to fundraise for Habitat for Humanity

By Makayla Tendall, The Gazette | Feb 02, 2018

CEDAR RAPIDS — Eastern Iowans have a chance to partake in food, football and fundraising this Sunday with Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Home Team Huddle fundraiser.

Cedar Valley Habitat has participated in the national event since 2009. Area Super Bowl watchers have until 5 p.m. Friday to sign up to have a Super Bowl party, during which hosts collect donations from guests.

When a party is registered with the local Habitat, hosts receive a party package that includes a T-shirt for the host, a tub of popcorn from the Great American Popcorn Co., forms for guests’ contact information and other supplies.

Donations fund Habitat projects in Linn and Benton counties.

All who donate are entered in a drawing for an NFL weekend getaway during the 2018 football season. A second drawing is held for a football autographed by Cedar Rapids native and football Hall of Fame inductee Kurt Warner, who supports the local event with his wife, Brenda.

As of Thursday, 46 parties were registered with Cedar Valley Habitat, but the organization is looking to bring that number up to 52 to match the 52nd annual championship game.

“This works for people who already have a party planned and want to throw this into the mix,” said Jonny Lipford, Habitat communications manager.

Since 2009, Cedar Valley Habitat has raised $118,000 from Home Team Huddle events, Lipford said. The highest-grossing party collected $1,600.
