Reader talks Common Core article

Apr 22, 2016

To the editor:

The Mt. Pleasant News hit a new low in journalism with Bryce Kelly’s front page story on Monday about a presentation made locally by Dr. Duke Pesta. A key affront was the headline (which may not be the work of Ms. Kelly) that implies that what you are about to read is the last word in truth about Common Core which is about as far from the truth as one could possibly get.

While Pesta twists thing to make you think that Common Core is some federally sponsored left wing plot, the truth of the matter is that it was started by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

I will give some credit for the uses of the word “asserts” and “according to Pesta” but by and large the article presents Pesta’s line without any attempt to verity its factualness or give any voice to opposing views.

It also quoted research by FreedomWorks (which arose from a Koch Brothers initiative according to Wikipedia) regarding data mining which is specifically prohibited by the program.

I am sure that Common Core is not perfect but it is not what Pesta claims and to report otherwise is a very poor approach on your part. I would like to refer your readers to an article by Milwaukee Journal reporter Karen Herzog (available on-line) which gives a somewhat more balanced report on Pesta’s claims.

As for me, having grown tired of seeing the local paper filled up with stories from far reaches of the state where I have no interest, big bold headlines on mundane items, and a seeming ability to report on local doings after they have happened with no advance notice that they were going to happen, I will not be renewing my subscription when it expires.

Sincerely,

George Chapman

Mt. Pleasant
