Robert Dean “Bob” Bonar 80, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home.

Funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with Father Gary Beckman and Father Joseph Phung officiating. Burial was in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery. Friends called after 4 p.m. on Sunday, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where the family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. A rosary service was held at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Relay for Life, HCI Hospice Care Services of Southeast Iowa, and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Bob was born on June 26, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant the son of Royal Frank & Crystal Gauss Bonar. The family moved to Fairfield, Albia, and Bloomfield and settled in Burlington in 1939. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1953, after graduating high school he joined the United States Army served his basic training at Ft. Sill, Okla. from there he went on to Korea and then to Japan. While he was in Japan he played basketball for Camp Yokohama. He was united in marriage to Arlene A. Henschen on August 19, 1953, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ft. Madison.

Over the years Bob loved the game of basketball, he played for the Hawkeye Motor Company, and also played for the Bill and Jim Beverage Company for 5 yrs. and he coached basketball for seven years for St. John’s Catholic School. He was involved with sports at Notre Dame School in Burlington where he served as Athletic Booster Club President while he was there he was the founder and organizer of the football program.

Moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1977, where he was the manager of Skerik Auto Parts. He was elected president of the goal line club during the construction of the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex. In 1981 Bob founded and organized the Fellowship Cup after a short term away he returned to help with the construction of the new building. Bob was in the auto parts business until his retirement. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where he taught 8th grade Religious Education for 15 years, was an usher for several years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob and Arlene owned A&B Antiques. He was an Iowa Hawkeye Fan, Green Bay Packers fan and Detroit Tigers Fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Bob delivered medicine for the Hy-Vee Pharmacy and was a funeral associate at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Bob is survived by his wife Arlene of Mt. Pleasant, four children: Pam Tipton (Tom) of Mt. Pleasant, Steve Bonar (Jackie) of Burlington, Mike Bonar of Mt. Pleasant and Scott Bonar (Leigh) of Phoenix, AZ. Grandchildren: Jennifer and Morgan, three step grandchildren: Chase, Brandi and David; one great grandson Jackson and two step great grandson’s Nathan and Carter and his sister Mary Saathoff of Burlington.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Flip and Ivan.
