Robert L. Strayer, 68, Donnellson, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson. The family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Donnellson. Burial will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Palliative Care Unit. Online condolences may be made to the family at

Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home of Donnellson is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Born Dec. 6, 1944, at Ft. Madison, he was the son of Harry and Agnes Pranger Strayer. On Aug. 3, 1984, he married Alice Hohl Pearson.

He was a graduate of Central High School in Donnellson. He was a conductor for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 2004 with 39 years of service. He served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966. He attended St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Donnellson. He was a Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed fishing at his pond with his grandchildren, reading, morel mushroom hunting, traveling and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Brenda (Rod) Rumelhart of Guthrie Center, Christine (Bob) Dirkx of Carroll; one step-daughter Brenda K. (Brad) Hagemeier of Clarion; one step-son Bryan (Samantha) Pearson and their children of St. James, Mo.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one sister, Rosie (Gerald) Smith of Ft. Madison; and three brothers, Larry (Pauline) Strayer, David (Andrea) Strayer and Jim (Sue) Strayer all of Donnellson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
