Rotary clubs sponsor world bike relief

Jul 12, 2017

The Evening and Noon Rotary Clubs of Mt. Pleasant are participating in the World Bicycle Relief Project.

In partnership with all the Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 6000 (which covers about half of Iowa), Mt. Pleasant’s clubs are participating in a program which seeks to mobilize people through the power of bicycles. The club hopes to envision a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education, health care and economic opportunity.

The project provides heavy duty utilitarian “buffalo” bikes to people in developing countries. The bike will provide residents with transportation for school, for health care volunteers to make visits, for farmers to deliver their products to consumers or the market, for teachers to get to rural areas and for workers to get to their jobs. For these people, the bikes are do the same things that cars and small trucks do in the USA.

One bike is making its way around District 6000 for display. The bike was on display during the Wednesday meeting of the Noon Rotary. The Evening Rotary Club will have the bike on display at the Mt. Pleasant Community Band Concert. The concert will be Thursday, July 13, at 6 p.m., at the Wright Family Pavilion during the Henry County Fair.

More information can be obtained from any member of the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Clubs.
