Salem to send nuisance abatement letters

SALEM — Some Salem residents will soon be receiving a stern warning in the mail.

The Salem City Council, at its meeting Wednesday, instructed the city clerk to send nuisance abatement letters to residents of a house on the 400 block of East Jackson Street and the 200 block of North Maple Street. The city is giving the residents 30 days to clean-up the property or face a possible fine or legal action.

In a related item, the city has been approached by a private firm, who has offered to remove debris from cluttered properties. The firm would then bill the homeowner and if not paid, ask to have the bill put on the property tax rolls.

City Clerk Haylee Stecker said the council tabled the matter for further study. “They want to talk to the city attorney for future guidance,” Stecker said. “We don’t know if it would be legal.”

Also tabled was a request from the fire department for new helmets. The council said it wanted to check the city’s financial picture before acting on the request.

The city also will be notifying people living in a camper on Oak Street that they have to vacate the camper because it is not legal according to city ordinance. The ordinance says people can only live in a camper for 30 days per year.

Christmas is coming to Salem Saturday, Dec. 9. That’s the day Santa will be at the Crew Public Library from 10-11 a.m., according to Kelly Patterson, library director. Council members also approved a $300 donation for “treat bags” for youngsters visiting Santa

In remaining agenda items, the council:

• Approved the addition of Jeff Baker to the fire department and Brandy Lin to the EMS unit.

• Approved the appointment of Jason Wesely to the library board.

Council members meet again in regular session Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m. in city hall.
