Samuel T. Bailey, 97, of Paducah, Ky., and formerly of Mobile, Ala., Chicago, Ill. and Griswold, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the New Sweden Lutheran Chapel, rural Lockridge. The Rev. Kenneth Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements. He was born May 8, 1916, on a farm southeast of Griswold. He was the son of Samuel T. and Clara R. (nee Wilfong) Bailey. He graduated from Griswold High School in 1934. He married Hope Victoria (nee Lillyblade) Bailey of the Four Corners area, rural Lockridge. She preceded him in death.

He worked for the Shaeffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison. For over 67 years, he was a member of the Pipe Fitter’s Local 597 of Chicago, Ill. He was retired from the union for 30 years.

Upon their retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Mobile, Ala. The couple later moved to Paducah, Ky., to live with their daughter.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the former United States Army Air Corps. He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by four daughters, Debra Bailey of Paducah, Ky., Diane (Ron) Petkunas of Oswego, Ill., Karen (Fines) Nelson of Dewey, Ariz. and Barbara Wilks of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; two sons, Kevin (Mary) Bailey of Orland Park, Ill. and David Bailey of Paragould, Ark.; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sons, Gary and Jack Bailey; four brothers, Orville, Harold, Sheldon and J.C. Bailey; and two sisters, Garnet Watznaur and Gladys Mason.
