SCC hosting African-American history lecturer Wednesday

Feb 19, 2018

WEST BURLINGTON — In recognition of Black History Month, Southeastern Community College (SCC) will host Dr. Hal Chase for two presentations of “Outside In: African-American History in Iowa, 1838-2018.”

Chase will present on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at noon in the Industrial Technology Training Center on SCC’s Keokuk campus and at 6:30 p.m. in room 123 on West Burlington’s campus.

The presentation is an audiovisual program that walks the audience through the milestones of Iowa’s African-American history from its territorial beginning in 1838 to the present. Chase focuses on African-American history’s intertwined and intimate relationship between black and white Americans, which has ranged from marriage to murder in the heart of our nation’s history.

A question and answer time will be held after the presentation, during which the audience is encouraged to share their own stories and pieces of the nation’s rich African-American heritage.

Chase earned his BA from Washington and Lee University, his MA from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in American Civilization with an emphasis on African American History. He taught U.S. African American and Iowa history at Des Moines Area Community College from 1989 to 2009.

The presentation is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, nonprofit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is sponsored by the SCC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
