Second half dooms IW football team in opener

MT. VERNON — Iowa Wesleyan opened up the 2017 football season at Cornell College on Saturday. The Tigers struggled in the second half and suffered a 62-25 loss to the Rams.

Cornell won the toss and elected to receive. They opened the scoring with a six-yard run with 12:17 on the clock. Alex Payne and the Tiger offense took over and got off to a good start. Payne went 6-6 in pass attempts on the opening drive for the Tigers. He finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run run. IW trailed 6-7 after a failed extra point attempt.

The Tiger defense gave up a touchdown on the next Rams possession, which brought the score to 10-6. On the next IW possession, Payne completed the first three pass attempts, and Tyree Thomas finished the drive with an 11-yard rush to put the Tigers ahead 13-10.

Iowa Wesleyan’s special teams gave up a kickoff return touchdown, but the offense was there to pick them up on the next drive. The Tigers scored on a six-yard rush by Payne. The extra point was blocked, but the Tigers had a 19-17 advantage over the Rams. At the end of the first half, IW trailed 31-19.

Iowa Wesleyan was the first to score in the second half. Payne capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive to bring the score to 31-25. The Tigers would fail to score the remainder of the game, and suffered a 62-25 defeat.

Payne went 21-36 for 285 yards through the air, and added 18 rushing attempts for 33 yards and three touchdowns. Rudy Amezcua led the receivers with ten receptions and 180 yards.

The defense was led by Austin Ferguson and Kameron Banks. Ferguson recorded 12 tackles, while Banks added 10 in the loss.

The Tigers will open up at home next week. They will host Crown College on Sept. 9, with a 12 p.m. kickoff.
