A collision on Highway 218 and 140th St. had firefighters struggling to extract a semi driver for nearly an hour from his overturned truck Monday, April 16.

Phyllis Schlatter was driving southbound with her granddaughter in the car on Highway 218 when her car was struck from behind by the semi as she attempted to turn right onto 140th St. The semi pushed her vehicle across the intersection onto the side of the highway before overturning into a ditch.

Phyllis’ husband Emil Schlatter said his wife was returning home from Iowa City when the accident happened.

“It’s a dangerous place,” Emil said about the Highway 218 and 140th St. intersection. “There’s no turning lane. You have to get slowed down fast enough. If you’re slowing down, now you’re a sitting duck for someone who might overlook you.”

Emil said that the semi driver “probably” did everything he could to avoid an accident, even up to the last possible second.

The Wayland, Winfield and Olds fire departments were on the scene as well as Iowa State Patrol, Henry County Sherriff’s Office deputies and paramedics from Henry County Health Center.

Phyllis and her granddaughter were examined by paramedics on the scene, they were transported to Henry County Health Center for further evaluation.

“You never know what the day will bring,” Emil said. “It just makes a person think.”

Med Force was called to the scene and once the semi driver was extracted from the vehicle, he was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. His condition was not known at the time of publication.
