Five area small business owners have been selected as finalist for the second annual Small Businesses of the Year.

The finalists were announced Wednesday, April 4, at the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance’s Alive After Five event, which was held at Care at Home Iowa.

Finalists for the 2018 Small Business of the Year award are Brown’s Shoe Fit, L.J. Roth Restoration Service, BP/Pep Stop/Godfather’s Pizza, Safeguard Source One/Wilson Distributing and Jean C. Wiley & Sons, Inc.

“When you look at one small business you think, ‘ah, they’re one of the little guys,’” Executive Vice President of the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance Kristi Ray said to a crowd during the finalist announcement. “But collective they’re the big guys.”

In Mt. Pleasant more than 250 of the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliances’ 360 businesses are small businesses, employing less than 25 employees.

These businesses, Ray told the crowd, contribute over $60,000 to the Chamber annually and collectively, and small business accounts for more than 1,200 jobs in the community.

Small business week got its start in 1963. Since then, every year the President of the United States issues a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week as the first week in May. The week long celebration recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. According to a press release from the Chamber, more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

“Every day, small businesses are working to grow their business, create jobs, and improve their community.” said Ray.

Small Business Week will be celebrated April 30-May 4, 2018. The week long event will kick off with a celebration at Sanity Coffee on Monday, May 1, at 8 a.m. and will commence with the announcement of the Small Business of the Year at a special luncheon on Friday, May 4 at 11:30 a.m., at the Union Block. Other events that week will include Alive After Five at Lampline and Quality Equipment on Wednesday, May 2 and ribbon cuttings at each of the finalists throughout the week.
