Splashing into summer:Mt. Pleasant pool opens despite chance of rain

Pleasant residents had a summer-time teaser on Memorial Day as the pool opened for families, before closing for the rest of the week.

Dark clouds couldn’t keep people away from the Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center on Saturday, June 2. With temps in the low 80s and the sun hiding behind clouds, the weather was perfect for making a splash on the beginning of summer.

The pool’s first official opening day was Memorial Day, where manager Kailey Peterson said they saw bigger crowds than normal. “I think Memorial Day was pretty big because a lot of parents had it off too,” she said. The pool was then closed for the next few days and officially re-opened on Friday, June 1.

Peterson said the crowds on Friday were mostly kids who came with friends. “We had a lot of school aged kids, a lot of middle school kids,” she said. To be alone at the pool, children must be at least 10 years of age. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

The crowd on Saturday was mostly kids while parents sat in lounge chairs to read books and enjoy a break from the heat of last week. Lifeguard Konnor Peterson estimated around 60 patrons and guessed they were mostly middle school or younger. He said the busiest time for the pool is an hour after it opens, then slows down as the day progresses.

Peterson’s favorite part of the day is watching the diving boards because of the entertainment they provide. “I always like being at boards because its more interesting when things happen,” he said.

Kids flipped off the diving boards, slid down the slides and some, like Corey Bryant, 12, just like “jumping in” the most. “I come here myself and meet my friends,” he said. Bryant said getting to come to the pool and hang out with his friends is something he looks forward to all school year.

Others, like Bille Schaefer of New London, came alone to enjoy the weather and relax with a book. Saturday was Schaefer’s first time at the pool and she’s looking forward to more. She was impressed with the facilities and thought it was important there was a safe, fun place for kids to spend their summers. “I like it, it’s really nice,” she said. “It keeps them busy and out of trouble.”

The Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center is open for lap swimming 12-1 p.m. and open swim 1-7 p.m. daily.
