Matt Bryant, publisher of The Mt. Pleasant News, has announced the promotion of Karyn Spory to managing editor.

Spory has been with The News for nearly three years, the last two of which she has served as the leader of the news department. In her new role she will continue with her current responsibilities while adding more operations management and community outreach duties.

“Karyn has been an asset to The News in many ways since she first came to Mt. Pleasant. She has done a lot in helping shape the direction and vision of our news products, first as a reporter and then as the news department head,” said Bryant. “With this promotion, I believe she will do the same while assisting to shape the future of all of our other products and services.”

In her new role, Spory will make an even greater effort to connect with readers, advertisers and the community as a whole.

“Her task is to do this both through the pages of our publications as well as being a visible and accessible contributor to the community,” he added.

“I am excited an eager to take on this expanded role at The News,” said Spory. “Had you asked me in college if I’d ever want to be an editor, I would have told you no. But I have had no greater joy than working to mold and transform our newspaper and publications, and to bring our readers the best reporting possible.”

Spory is a 2011 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in electronic media, she began her professional career at The Daily Jefferson County Union, in Ft. Atkinson, Wis. She then covered higher education at The Columbia Tribune, in Columbia, Mo., before coming to The News.

Spory’s new role began this week.
