Tennis season begins at East Lake

Mt. Pleasant girls fall in first home meet of the season

Tennis season is underway in Mt. Pleasant. The Panther girls’ team opened the season at East Lake on Thursday, facing West Burlington-Notre Dame in non-conference action.

The Panthers fell 9-0 to the Nikes, going 0-6 in singles matches and 0-3 in doubles matches.

Quin Whaley made her debut in the No. 1 spot and had the closest contest of anybody. She fell 8-6 to WB-ND’s Lydia Becker. Erin Zihlman fell 8-2 in the No. 2 game against WB/ND’s Claire Hackenmiller.

Hallie Sandeen dropped the No. 3 match 8-1 against McKenzie Fry. Sierra Barton fell to Riley Brueck in the No. 4 match. No. 5 Breann Runyon lost 8-1 to Kennedy Rheinschmidt and Elle Larson dropped the No. 6 match 8-2.

Whaley and Zihlman made their debut as the No. 1 duo. They took on Becker and Hackenmiller, dropping the match 8-4. Sandeen and Barton dropped the No. 2 doubles match 8-3 against Fry and Brueck. Runyon and Larson were shut out 8-0 by Rheinschmidt and Davis in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Panthers had one win in junior varsity matches. Shaleen Thiengmany won her JV match over WB/ND’s Alyssa Dameron. Madecyn Anderson fell 4-0 in her JV singles match against Lizzi Grobstich.

Anderson and Chelsea Anderson fell to Grobstich and Joleen Kelly 4-0 in JV doubles. Anderson and Maggie Fitzpatrick dropped a JV doubles match against Grobstich and Kelly 4-1.

The Panthers will be at Fairfield today (Monday) at 4:30 p.m., for their next contest.
