DONNELLSON — The New London baseball team took the lead immediately on Thursday night in Donnellson, and led coast-to-coast en route to a 5-3 victory.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, one in the third and one in the fourth to lead 5-0 in the middle of the fourth.

Central Lee didn’t go down quietly. They put up two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to cut the Tiger lead to 5-3, which was their lowest advantage since the first inning.

Tiger reliever Britt Noel was able to shut the Hawks down over the final two innings and New London picked up the SEISC South Division win.

New London had three players have multi-hit games in the win. Justin Henecke led the way, going 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Cole Helmerson went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Isaac McSorley was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Henecke started the game and threw four innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit and one walk, while striking out six batters. Noel threw three innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and one walk. He also had six strikeouts.

The win came one night after a 5-1 loss at Keokuk on Wednesday. The Chiefs held the Tigers to three hits. Helmerson and McSorley each had a triple and Noel had a single.

McSorley was tagged with the loss against Keokuk. He went one inning and gave up three earned runs on five hits and no walks. Sam Loyd had a nice relief outing, going four and one-third innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out one batter.

New London moved to 12-4 overall this year and 8-3 in conference play. They’ll head to Lone Tree tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m.
