Tiger women fall at Eureka College

EUREKA, Ill. — The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team took on the second place team in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings Saturday afternoon. The Tigers were outmatched by the Red Devils, falling 84-46 on the road.

Iowa Wesleyan’s offense struggled against one of the top teams in the conference. IW was held to 25 percent shooting from the field and less than 20 percent from behind the arc for the game. Iowa Wesleyan was also out rebounded 54-33 by the Red Devils. Eureka held the Tigers to eight points in the opening quarter, and eighteen points at the half.

The first basket of the third quarter may have taken a little while for Iowa Wesleyan, but the offense was finally able to knock some shots down. Darby Massner hit a three-pointer with 6:47 to start the scoring for IW. Josie Zerrusen also sank a three-pointer for the Tigers in the third quarter. The Tigers matched their first half point total in the third quarter.

Zerrusen scored the only field goals of the final period for the Tigers. She hit a jumper with seven minutes to put Iowa Wesleyan on the board. Zerrusen knocked in a three-pointer with 3:13 remaining in the game. Eureka’s defense held IW to just ten points in the final period of play, and they would defeat the Tigers 84-46.

Iowa Wesleyan was led in scoring by Zerrusen. She finished with 17 points in 37 minutes of play. D. Massner added 14 points as the only other Tiger to reach double figures. LaStella Slack and Allie Massner each finished with a team high seven rebounds.

The Tigers fall to 2-13 overall this season and 2-5 in SLIAC play. They will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Iowa Wesleyan will return to Ruble Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off against MacMurray College.
