Tigers, Wolves gear up for regional softball tournament

Postseason time is here for the New London and Winfield-Mt. Union softball teams.

The Tigers and Wolves will begin their regional tourneys tonight (Monday) at 7 p.m. Both schools will be at home, with New London hosting Moulton-Udell and W-MU hosting Keota.

New London finished their regular season schedule 13-13, going 1-3 in their final four games, which all took place from Thursday to Saturday.

The Tigers won their home game Thursday against Mediapolis, 7-4. Breanna Mettler went 2-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the win. Kara Krieger was 2-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Sydni Coleman picked up the win over Mediapolis. She threw four and two-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out two.

New London fell, 8-4, at West Burlington on Friday night despite another homer by Mettler. The Tigers dropped two games at the Mid-Prairie tournament on Saturday, 12-0 to Durant-Bennett and 9-8 to Central Clinton, DeWitt.

W-MU finished the regular season 7-14 with a 6-5 win over Danville on Thursday and a 7-0 loss at Highland on Friday.

The Wolves came back from a 2-0 deficit midway through the fourth inning to beat Danville. They scored one run in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Bears scored three in the seventh but W-MU hung on by one to secure the victory.

Hannah Buffington was 1-3 with three RBIs in the win. Maci Richardson went 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Kara Wade went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Madie Anderson picked up the win against Danville, going seven innings and giving up five unearned runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out five.

Winners of tonight’s games will play again on Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. The Wolves would be at Sigourney and the Tigers would be at Moravia.
