Tigers, Wolves headed to boys’ state golf meet

IOWA CITY — What a day it was for Henry County’s two Class 1A boys’ golf teams. New London and Winfield-Mt. Union went one-two at their district tournament at Pleasant Valley Golf Course, qualifying both teams for the state meet.

After finishing second to W-MU at the last meet, New London edged the Wolves for first place. The Tigers shot a 342 to beat W-MU by one stroke for the district championship. East Buchanan wasn’t too far behind either, shooting a 349 for third.

The Tigers were led by second-place finisher Clayton Phillips, who shot a 79. Phillips shot a 39 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine to sneak into second by one stroke.

Justin Carter had a good night for New London as well. He shot a 43 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine to finish 11th at 85. Alex Dentlinger shot a 43 on the front and a 44 on the back to shoot 87, which put him in 14th to give the Tigers three players in the top 15.

Gavin Prottsman was the fourth New London scorer. He shot a 45 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine to end up at 91. Javis Krieger shot a 49 on both the front and back nine to end up at 98, and Justin Carter shot a 54 on the front and a 53 on the back to shoot 107.

Kaleb Hagge had yet another razor sharp outing. The defending Class 1A state champion won the district meet by seven strokes, shooting a 72. Hagge shot a 38 on the front nine and absolutely torched the back nine, shooting a 34.

Nolan Ross was the second W-MU scorer, shooting an 87 to tie with Dentlinger for 14th. Ross shot a 42 on the front nine and finished the back nine with a 45.

Jarod Kadel was third on the team, shooting a 91. He finished the front nine at 43 and shot a 48 on the back nine to give the Wolves their third score. Noah Freeman rounded out the Wolves’ scorers, shooting a 48 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine to finish at 93.

Kash Rossiter shot a 46 on the front nine and a 50 on the back nine to wins up at 96. Graham Hagge ended the day at 99, shooting a 45 on the front nine and a 54 on the back nine.

The Tigers and Wolves will be among the teams battling it out for the Class 1A team championship in Newton on Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25.
