W-MU girls win, boys lose in DH

WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union girls held off the Arrows 48-40 to move to 3-0 on Tuesday night, but the boys’ team dropped their season opener 70-26.

A fast start helped the Lady Wolves pick up their third straight home victory. The Wolves nearly shut out the Arrows in the first quarter to take an 11-3 lead, and held on to a 22-16 advantage at halftime.

W-MU had their best quarter of the day in the third period. The Lady Wolves outscored Wapello 17-8 to take a commanding 39-24 lead into the fourth period.

Wapello made a run in the fourth quarter to cut the W-MU lead to double digits but the Lady Wolves hung on for the 48-40 victory.

Lexee Hartsock had a huge game, tallying 25 pionts, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lead the team. Jenna Buffington added 13 points, five assists, two blocks and a steal.

Pearl Krieger-Coble added to the inside attack with six points and 11 rebounds. Jami Wilkerson had four points and a steal. Only four W-MU girls scored all game, but Lauren Jamison boosted the team with four assists.

The boys struggled to stop a high-scoring Indian team early. Wapello put up 20 points in the firsty quarter and 19 in the second to take a 39-24 lead into the break.

The Wolves were able to compete a little closer in the second half but Wapello continued to run away and handed W-MU their first loss of the season, 70-26.

Five Wolves were able to score in the loss. B.J. Rodgers had 12 points to lead the way, which inclueded three makes from outside. Christian Gerot scored six points on a couple of three-pointers. Mitchell Niebuhr and Nolan Ross each had three points and Jared Arnold finished with two.
