W-MU girls win in OT, boys fall to Wildcats

WINFIELD — It took an overtime period, but the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team claimed a 54-47 win over Columbus on Friday.

The Class 1A No. 11 Wolves outscored the Wildcats 9-2 in overtime to seal the victory after coming from behind in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 45 at the end of regulation.

The W-MU boys’ team didn’t fare as well. Columbus posted 40 points in the first half, giving the Wolves a deficit they couldn’t erase. The Wildcats won the game by a score of 70-46.

In the girls’ game, Columbus has a 21-19 lead at halftime and stretched that to 35-30 by the end of the third quarter.

W-MU fought back in the final eight minutes to tie the game, and it was the Wolves who took control in overtime.

Shelby Therme scored a team-high 18 points for W-MU, and Emily Mathews had 15 points in the win.

Logan Hartsock led the Wolves on the boards with nine rebounds and Therme pulled down seven.

Hartsock also blocked seven shots on the night; Mathews had three blocks.

Karlie Wade dished out three assists and Therme had two steals for W-MU.

In the boys’ game, the Wolves couldn’t keep pace with the visitors. The Wildcats never scored fewer than 14 points in a quarter, running away with the win.

Max Fricke led the Wolves with 14 points on the night, the only W-MU player in double figures.

Jake Edwards had nine points for the Wolves.

Edwards and Sam Jennings had six rebounds apiece and Bryce Robison dished out four assists.

Robison, Klayton Booth and Garret Baker had two steals each; Robison and Baker each blocked two shots.

The boys’ team is now 5-5 over all and 4-4 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division.

The girls are 10-1 overall and 8-1 in conference.

Next up for W-MU is tonight’s game at Louisa-Muscatine, starting with the girls at 6 p.m.
