W-MU narrows down possible building designs

WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union Community School District will once again ask residents to go to the polls and vote for a bond referendum in order to renovate the school building. But before any vote can be cast, the school board will have to decide the size, scope and design of the project.

Sam Johnson, of BLDD Architects, met with the school board Wednesday night to discuss design concepts. Last February, voters dismissed a $9.5 million project, of which residents only would have been taxed on $7.2 million due to other funding sources.

Wednesday night, Johnson presented four, hand-drawn concept sketches. Each concept featured different configurations for updating the Kindergarten classrooms, shop, commons and band/choir room, all of which were items the community signaled were top priorities last time around. The concept drawings did not have any price tag associated with them. Instead, Johnson suggested the board choose two concepts they liked and then architects from BLDD, as well as ESTES, would take the drawings from concepts to practical designs. The board members signaled they preferred concept two and concept three. Johnson indicated those two concepts would be the most feasible.

Both concepts moved the Kindergarten classrooms into the main buildings from the temporary trailers they are currently housed in. However, Concept three would move the classrooms onto the second story. Concept two expanded the shop, band/choir rooms as well as the commons. The concept also allows for the commons to stay beside the kitchen. The other chosen concept three moved the commons away from the kitchen, which allowed for a larger classroom for band/choir and shop.

Johnson said he would have more detailed designs for the board next month.
