W-MU students collect ‘change for change’

Nov 29, 2017

When the elementary students at Winfield-Mt. Union heard about the devastation and destruction left by Hurricane Maria, they decided to do something.

Throughout the month of October, the students collected “change for change”, monetary donations that would aid in the hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

The cause was near and dear to students’ and staff’s heart as elementary school Principal Gabe Wylder has family members in Puerto Rico that were affected by the hurricane.

From Oct. 2 — 6, students collected pennies. The following week, nickels. Then dimes and quarters. On Oct. 30 and 31, the students collected dollars and any other change they might have. Over the course of the month, the W-MU students collected $3,025.

According to an email from Wylder, the funds will be sent to Luis Munoz Rivera School in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. The school educates students from Kindergarten through fifth-grade. Roughly 482 students attend Luis Munoz Rivera, however, since the hurricane the school has been used as a shelter.
