WACO boys fall to Notre Dame, top Keota

WAYLAND — The WACO boys’ basketball team fell 71-47 at Burlington Notre Dame on Friday night but bounced back with a 72-60 win against Keota on Saturday at home.

The Warriors had a rough start against Notre Dame on Friday. The Nikes had a monster first quarter, outscoring the Warriors 23-6. WACO inched back in the second quarter but Notre Dame still held a 37-22 at halftime.

Notre Dame was able to pull away in the second half. The Nikes outscored WACO 19-9 in the third quarter, and held on in the fourth quarter for a 24-point win.

Colton Horak led WACO with 10 points in the loss. Nik Coble flirted with a double-double, scoring eight rebounds and pulling down 11 rebounds. Calvin Battle had seven points. Drew Kissell finished with six points and three assists. Matthew Leichty, Braden Hammond and Beau Beckler scored three points apiece and Elijah McGohan finished with two.

WACO started hot on Saturday, completely flipping the script from the night before. The Warriors outscored Keokuk 18-11 in the first period and stretched their lead by one point before halftime, where they held a 35-27 advantage.

Keota played WACO even in the third quarter, but the Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter to pick up the 12-point win.

Coble got his double-double on Saturday, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Eichelberger scored 15 points. Battle had 12 points, and Horak scored 10.

Beckler scored eight points in the win. Kissell scored five points and led the team with seven rebounds. Leichty scored four points in the win and McGohan finished with three.

The WACO boys moved to 2-3 after the weekend’s games. They will take on Van Buren tonight (Tuesday) at 7:30 p.m.
