WACO creating an E Sports Arena for new co-curricular activity

WAYLAND — A new co-curricular activity will be added to the WACO Community School District lineup next school year.

Finishing touches are being made to a classroom that has been converted to an E Sports Arena. School board members received a presentation on E Sports and toured the arena during their regular meeting Jan. 15.

WACO also plans to have a competitive E Sports team next year which would make the district, school officials claimed, one of the first in the state to have a team.

E Sports are primarily strategy games and a form of competition using video games. E Sports can be played individually or with five-member teams.

Some of the games being considered at WACO are “League of Legends”, “Rocket League”, “OSU!”, “Fortnite”, “Overwatch”, and “Hearthstone”.

WACO received a $25,000 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation which was matched with $12,500 in local funds to create and equip the arena.

Students in grades 7-12 will be able to use the arena, but the school competition team will be confined to students in grades 9-12.

Other action during the Jan. 15 board meeting saw directors approve the 2018-19 superintendent sharing agreement with the Washington Community School District. The districts share the services of Supt. Jeff Dicks.

The board also accepted the resignation of Amy Weber, an elementary school paraprofessional.

WACO board members meet again in regular session Monday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m., in the media center at the junior/senior high school in Wayland.
