MONTEZUMA — The season came to an end for the WACO girls’ basketball team on Tuesday night with a regional tournament loss to Montezuma. The Warriors couldn’t solve a tough Montezuma defense and fell 53-28.

Montezuma held WACO to just seven points in the first two quarters of play. The Warriors were outscored 14-5 in the first quarter and 13-2 in the second quarter to take a 27-7 lead at the half.

The Warriors played their opponent a lot tougher in the second half, getting outscored 9-8 in the third quarter and 17-13 in the fourth.

WACO’s loss ended a modest two-game winning streak. The Warriors ran over Cardinal 69-27 to end the regular season and blasted Iowa Mennonite 58-38 in the SEISC girls’ shootout.

The Warriors will lose just one senior to graduation this year. Kiana Miller, the team’s leading scorer with 10.5 points per game, played her last high school game.

In other action around the region, North Mahaska topped BGM 60-43, Iowa Mennonite knocked out English Valleys 48-47 and Holy Trinity Catholic knocked out Winfield-Mt. Union 53-38.

The four winners will play in the semifinal round on Friday, February 16, at 7 p.m. North Mahaska will host IMS and Montezuma will host HTC.
