WINFIELD — It was all WACO in the first of two Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls’ shootout matches in Winfield on Friday night.

The Warriors got things rolling for the South Division with a dominant win over Iowa Mennonite. WACO pummeled IMS over the first two quarters of the game, in route to a 58-38 victory.

IMS’ offense couldn’t get anything going against the Warrior defense over the first two periods. WACO dominated the first period 16-3, and scored a game-high 17 points in the second quarter to stretch their advantage to 33-9 at halftime.

From then on, the Warriors could cruise. IMS outscored WACO 15-10 in the third quarter to pull within 19 points, but WACO added one point to the advantage in the fourth and walked out with a 20-point victory.

It was Kiana Miller who led the Warriors once again. The lone WACO senior scored 19 points on 9-15 shooting, pulled down six rebounds and led the team with four steals.

Kirsten Conelly was red-hot from the outside. She went 4-7 from three-point land, hitting over half of WACO’s three-pointers to finish with 13 points. She also pulled out six rebounds of her own.

Aubri Garnsey filled the stat sheet for the Warriors, finishing the day with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Nadiyah Brown scored three points. Ashleigh Hallett, Grace Conwell and Maysan Lee ended the night at two apiece. Clara Schmitz didn’t score in the win, but she did colead the squad with seven rebounds.

The Warrior girls won’t be in action again until next week. WACO gets a bye in the first round of the Class 1A postseason tournament. They’ll take on Montezuma on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the regional quarterfinals, which begin at 7 p.m.
