WAYLAND — It was tough sledding for the WACO girls’ basketball team on Tuesday night, as they took on a talented Central Lee squad in the season opener.

The Warriors were unable to contain the high-power Hawks, who jumped out to an early lead and walked out with a 74-14 win.

Central Lee was on fire early, scoring 18 points in the first seven minutes and shutting the Warriors out on defense during that stretch. The Hawks put up 25 points in the period and led WACO 25-3 after eight minutes of play.

The Warrior offense woke up a bit in the second quarter, but not before Central Lee had stretched their lead to 41-3. The Warriors scored seven points over the last three minutes of the half, but the Hawks led 51-10 at the break.

Kiana Miller led the Warriors with five points after the first two periods. She hit one three-pointer in the first half and added two free throws.

Central Lee continued to score in bunches in the second half. Hawks’ star McKenzie Northup finished with 28 points as WACO ended the night with a 60-point loss.

Miller finished with nine of WACO’s 14 points on the day. Clara Schmitz scored three points in the loss, and Laney Graber added two. Both Schmitz and Graber scored all their points in the first half.

WACO fell to 0-1 to start the season. They will take on Danville on the road, on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 6 p.m., with the boys’ season opener following.
