WACO interviewing superintendent candidates

School Board hopes to announce new superintendent next week

WAYLAND — The WACO School Board is interviewing superintendent candidates this week.

Earlier this year, current Superintendent Jeff Dicks announced he would be leaving at the end of his contract year, leaving the shared WACO Community School District and Washington School District looking for someone to take his place.

After the Washington School District announced their new superintendent in April, they also announced they would not continue their superintendent sharing agreement with WACO.

WACO has been in discussions with six people to fill the superintendent position. Their names are being withheld at this time. Dicks said two of them are seriously willing to join a sharing agreement with the WACO School District.

“The shared is financially the right way to go,” Dicks said during a WACO School Board meeting on Monday, May 21.

Dicks explained that sharing a superintendent would generate $53,000 from the state, which is eight students. Each student is weighed at $6,700.

Other candidates include a retired superintendent and someone who works for the Iowa Area Education Agencies.

During his tenure, Dicks worked at WACO 30 percent of the time, which is about a day and a half. He is looking for a superintendent who could give 20 percent of their time to WACO, which is about one day a week.

He is hesitant to consider the retired superintendent, while qualified, as a viable option because she wants to work two days a week.

Dicks views whichever candidate WACO hires to replace him as superintendent as an interim position because it’s so late in the year to be searching for someone to fill the position.

The decision will be brought to the full school board for approval.

Dicks hopes to announce the new superintendent next week.
