WAYLAND — It was a Henry County showdown in Wayland on Tuesday night as WACO and New London played their first doubleheader of the year.

The WACO girls took the first game, topping the Tigers 64-42. New London got revenge in the boys’ game, taking it 56-42.

The Warriors and Tigers went back and fourth throughout the first half of the girls’ game. WACO led 17-11 after the first quarter and 27-23 at halftime, thanks in part to eight first half points by Kristen Conley.

WACO stretched their lead to double digits early in the third quarter and never looked back. The Warriors outscored the Tigers 33-19 over the final two quarters to pick up the win.

Conley was on fire all night, finishing with 19 points, including four three-pointers to lead the Warriors. Kiana Miller scored 12 points, and Nadiyah Brown had 10.

Clara Schmidt had eight points for WACO. Aubrey Garnsey scored seven. Ashleigh Hallett and Maysan Lee scored three points apiece and Morgan Graber finished with two.

Sydni Coleman led the way for New London with 14 points. Savannah Sutherland scored eight. Alexa Wenger had six.

Layney Loyd and Kristen Rohdy had four points apiece for the Tigers in the loss. Kara Krieger scored three points. Alisha Boles had two, and Peyton Jackson scored one.

It was the Alex Dentlinger show early on in the boys’ game. Dentlinger hit two three-pointers in the first half and finished with 12 points in the period.

A balanced WACO attack kept the Warriors close, however, and New London led by just five points, at 29-24, when the halftime buzzer sounded.

New London couldn’t hit anything from the outside in the second half, but the inside game was working enough to hold on to the lead.

WACO cut the lead to just one point in the fourth quarter. New London led 43-42 with just five minutes remaining.

The Tigers did eventually pull away, however, and escaped Wayland with a 14-point win.

Dentlinger and Isaac McSorley co-led the Tiger boys with 17 points apiece. Keontae Luckett had 12 points. Tyler Henecke scored five. Jalen Birdsell had four and Shae Summerfield had one.

Drew Kissell and Beau Beckler scored nine points apiece for WACO. Jacob Fried had eight points. Conner Eichelberger, Colton Horak and Nik Coble each tallied four points, and Matthew Leichty and Calvin Battle scored two points each.
